COMPUTER NETWORK | PRIVATE STUDY | PROTOCOLS IN TOPIC 2

LAYER 7: APPLICATION LAYER
PROTOCOL
OVERVIEW
 DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - a protocol that automatically provides an IP host with its IP address and other related configuration information.
 FTP
File Transfer Protocol - protocol used for exchanging files over the internet.
 SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is used when email is delivered from an email client to an email server or when email is delivered from one email server to another
 POP3
Post Office Protocol - allows an email client to download an email from an email server.
 IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol - is is a protocol that an email client can use to download email from an email server
 HTTP
Hypertext Transfer Protocol - is an application protocol for distribution.

LAYER 6: PRESENTATION LAYER
PROTOCOL
OVERVIEW
 AFP
Apple Filing Protocol - the protocol for communicating with AppleShare file servers.
 SMB
Server Message Block - it is a network file sharing protocol.
 NCP
Network Control Protocol - allowed users to access and use computers and devices at remote locations and to transmit files between computers
 SSL MIME
Multi-Purpose Mail Extensions - is the extension of the original Internet E-mail protocol

LAYER 5: SESSION LAYER
PROTOCOL
DESCRIPTION
ASP
A Simple Protocol - it demonstrates the infrastructure which has to be in place to implement even the simplest protocol.
NetBIOS
Network Basic Input/Output System - provides the session and transport services describes in th OSI model.

LAYER 4: TRANSPORT LAYER
PROTOCOL
OVERVIEW
 TCP
Transmission Control Protocol - a standard that defines how to establish and maintain a network conversation via which application programs can exchange data.
 UDP
User Datagram Protocol - an alternative communications protocol to TCP. used primarily for establishing low-latency and loss tolerating connections between applications on the Internet.
 NetBUI
NetBios User Interface
 SPX
Sequenced Packet Exchange - handles packet sequencing. it prepares the sequence of packets that a message is divided into and manage the reassembly of received packets
 ATP
Autonomous Transport Protocol - maintain a reliable transport connection between two endpoints

LAYER 3: NETWORK LAYER
PROTOCOL
OVERVIEW
 IP
Internet Protocol - set of rules that govern how packets are transmitted over a network.
 OSPF
Open Shortest Path First - a router protocol used to find the best path for packets as they pass through as set of connected networks.
 BGP
Border Gateway Protocol - manages how packets are routed acros the internet through the exchange of routing and reachability information between edge routers.
 NetBEUI
NetBIOS Extended User Interface - the program that lets computers communicate within a local area network.
 DDP
Distributed Data Protocol - a client server protocol for querying and updating a server-side databse and for synchronizing such updates among clients.

LAYER 2: DATA LINK LAYER
PROTOCOL
OVERVIEW
 Ethernet
A link layer protocol in the TCP/IP stack, describing how networked devices can format data for transmission to other network devices ont the same segment, and how to put that data out on the network connection
 Token Ring
Is a LAN Network in which all computers are connected in a ring or star topology and pass one or more logical tokens from host to host.
 FDDI
Fiber Distributed Data Interface - a set of ANSI and ISO standards for data transmission on fiber optic lines in a local area network
 IEEE 802.11
is a set of (MAC). specifications fro implementing wireless local area network.
 ATM
Asynchronus Transfer Mode - a switching technique used by telecommunication networks that used asynchronus time-division multiplexing to encode small, fixed-sized cells.
 PPP
Point-to-Point Protocol - commonly used for Internet connections over dial-up lines, It is a more robust protocol that can transport not only IP, but also other types of packets.
 HDLC
High-Level Data Link Control - provides both a best-effort unreliable and reliable service. It is used with various serial interface protocols defined in physical layer.
